![]() Lindy Hop, known as Jitterbug in Edinburgh, is a member of the African American dances that evolved in New York City in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It was an organic fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development, but was predominantly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and charleston. Lindy hop co-evolved with jazzswing dance family. It is frequently described as a jazz or street dance. The lindy hop is popularly thought to get its name from famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's nickname "Lucky Lindy", but this is unlikely since his solo non-stop flight from New York to Paris in which he "hopped" the Atlantic was not until 1927 after the Lindy Hop had already been popularized.
