Lindy Hop, known as Jitterbug in Edinburgh, is a member of the African American dances that evolved in New York City in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It was an organic fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development, but was predominantly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and charleston. Lindy hop co-evolved with jazzswing dance family. It is frequently described as a jazz or street dance.

The lindy hop is popularly thought to get its name from famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's nickname "Lucky Lindy", but this is unlikely since his solo non-stop flight from New York to Paris in which he "hopped" the Atlantic was not until 1927 after the Lindy Hop had already been popularized.

You will look and feel great and wow you guests!

Helen and Ben of Zoot Swing can help to make your First Dance memorable with romantic Blues or Big Band flair.

Rather than focusing on a piece of choreography,. we specialise in teaching you the tools to dance. Imagine your first dance beingn as relaxed and enjoyable as a warm embrace, dancing to special music in front of your family and friends.

By teaching you how to move your body, connect with your partner and dance with your music, you'll be free to focus on the moment and have the skills to continue to dance all evening.

Contact us via email or phone to discuss any aspect of your First Dance.

Finally, having gone through the experience of organising a wedding for ourselves, we don't believe in charging the "wedding tax." Our First Dance lessons cost the same as our Swing private lessons.

Prices:

  • 1 to 4 person Private Lessons: £30 per student, per hour
  • A block of 5 hours for a couple costs just £250
  • Group Private Lessons of any size: £Contact Us

Around 2000 in the heart of Melbourne, Australia Ben and Helen took their first Lindy Hop steps. Although they originally danced with different Lindy Hop schools their love of social dancing brought them together one memorable Sunday afternoon.

They have danced their way around the world through Japan, Sweden and England, and have finally come to rest in Edinburgh where they set up Zoot Swing in order to spread their love for the dance throughout Scotland.

Their dance experience includes competitions; public performances; learning form international Lindy Hop dancers; and numerous hours of fun on the social dance floor.

Their teaching style focuses on lead and follow and musicality rather than routines or sequences or moves. They also teach aerials (a.k.a. air-steps or acrobatics).
