Edinbop Caberet - 23rd JulyAnd speaking of
performances you really should come to the Edinbop Caberet Night this
coming Wednesday 23rd of July to see Zoot Swing students performing their
wonderful 20s Charleston number. These guys have worked so hard over
the last six weeks to look gorgeous, so come and give them your
support. The night will start at 9pm and costs only £2, and there's
always lots of dancing in between performances. The Edinbop

you can.2. Edinburgh Lindy Exchange - September 26, 27,
28Still not
registered for the ELX? It's going to be a wild event with loads
of out-of-town dancers (UK and international) and tickets are still at

Lindy Exchange website for
details.We also
are in need of floor or couch space to host out of town dancers for the
ELX, so if you have some to spare let us know A.S.A.P. If you can
host people on the nights of the ELX 26-28th September, and a day either
side of that, please register your availability under 'hosting' at
www.edinburghlindyexchange.co.uk It's a great
way to meet people from around the globe. There are no expectations
on you other than supplying a place to crash - bed, matress, couch or
floor
space. 3. Summer Dance

Inverleith Row), EH3 5QN. Usually about £5,
8pm.4. Streets of Dance
festivalThe
inagural Streets of Dance festival in Durham gets a special mention
here as it promoted not only dance, but especially Lindy Hop to the
City of Durham and as a special feature Helen was asked to come down to
work with New College Durham performing arts students for a week to learn
a Lindy Hop display dance. Six students took part in this
project which was aimed to get young people swing dancing. They
performed three pieces at the festival in Durham after only five mornings
learning the dance, which was a phenommenal effort by all
involved. Also featured at the festival were the Jiving Lindy
Hoppers who put on a fantastic display of dance from 20s Charleston to 30s
Lindy Hop. They were such an inspiration of coreography and dance,
and they also broke the world record for number of flips (aerials) in one
minute. 27 by the way!Click here to see photos from the
festival.5.
Dancing in the Street competitionWe have been busy beavers, because we've just come
back from this competing in the finals of this competition in
Manchester. After getting through the heats back in June, Helen and
Ben went back to compete in the final last Saturday. The competition
had all sorts of dancers including Hip Hop, Disco, Rhumba and Swing
styles. We didn't win the £1000 but had a great time
competing. Footage of the performance will be on the website
soon.6. Edinburgh Winter Swing

Hi Zoot Swingers,
Do you have a spare couch or
floor space? Hotsing visiting dancers is a great way to meet
new people and to learn about other cities or countries. With
the ELX fast approaching and visitors from around the UK, Europe and
the US, we need to find lots of Edinburgh hosts! Please email
us or go to the ELX Website to register your
ability to host a visitor.
We've just started going through the feedback from last weekend's
aerials course and so far the response has been very positive.
One cautionary tale - a participant badly injured her foot on
landing. As teachers we're always wonder what we could have
done differently or what we will change for next time. The
participant and spotters (people responsible for catching the lady)
seemed to do everything right but still the lady's landing was
off. Please remember when practicing aerials that accidents
can and will occasionally happen. Always use spotters for new
aerials. Always practice the set-ups over and over again and
always approach aerials with somber but confident attitude and never
try them out on the social dance floor. When done
right, they are loads of fun and add great flash to routines and jam
circles.

Edinburgh Lindy Exchange '08
Many of you are aware that a number of
Edinburgh Swing Dancers are organising a Lindy Exchange to take place
here in Edinburgh on the 26 -28th of September 08. Edinburgh has a
great social dance scene and therefore we thought it would be a great
idea to invite dancers from all over the world to come to Edinburgh and
dance with us. Obviously an Exchange does not work without lots of
local (Scottish) dancers to meet, greet and dance with those who have
come from dance floors further afield. So if you fancy a great weekend
of social dancing don't miss out.
The Edinburgh Lindy Exchange 08 promises to
be one long dance party. For more information, visit the the Edinburgh
Lindy Exchange website or talk to Ben or Helen.
As you can imagine such a weekend takes a
lot of organising, hence it would really help with the administration
if we could ask all our local dancers to sign up and pay as early as
possible ideally by the end of June. This will allow the ELX team to
concentrate on ensuring a successful event. To book go to the ELX web
site click on bookings and follow the instructions. Alternatively print
off a copy of the booking form, complete and hand in with a cheque
(payable to The Edinburgh Lindy Exchange to either) Nick/Rhona at ESDS,
Shell at Edinbop or Ben/Helen at Zoot Swing.

Hi Zoot Swingers,
The big news this week is
Sunday's Aerials workshop and we made it through to the finals of a
dance competition in Manchester today (Saturday afternoon)!
We're chuffed, of course!! The competition, held in
Manchester, saw us compete against 7 other Swing and Rock'n'Roll acts
at the Printworks entertainment complex. We haven't competed
in a long time so it felt great to hear the compare anounce "...and all
the way from Edinburgh..." . Two couples (including us)
were selected from today's heat to compete in the finals on the 19th of
July. This comming Monday morning we'll be
performing our act on a Manchester breakfast program, at approximately
8:15. We're told the chanell is available on Sky, in case
you're interested and not living in Manchester.

Private Lessons
Guaranteed
to work you hard but still be fun and rewarding!
Something you specifically want to work on? Moves, musicality,
air-steps (aerials/acrobatics) or style. Maybe you want to progress
faster, or simply give your dancing a kick-start after a lull.
Whatever the reason, private lessons are a great way to help you on
your dancing journey. You may even prefer to have a private lesson with
a small group of friends.
Ben and Helen are both available for private teaching of individuals
and small groups. If you're interested or just want to have a chat
about how we can improve your dancing call Ben 07812 241 253, or Helen
07747 591 731.
Prices:
Single Person Private: £20 per
person, per hour
2 Person Private: £15 per person, per hour
Small Group Private (3 or 4 people, 4 people max.):
£10 per person, per hour

Music Played in Class
A
number of people have asked what we play. We tend to play an
eclectic mix of old time Big Band, "Revivalist" (old tunes played with
modern instruments) and Neo-swing. In the beginner classes,
we
look for music with a steady and easily-heard beat. Bands to
look
out for are: Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, Moira's Modern Rhythmists,
Patty Levay and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Campus Five, Steve Purcell
and the Pearly Shells, Cherry Popping Dadies
and Royal Crown Revue
